Failover of Zoom Video Conferencing with Dell EMC SD-WAN
June 2020, when everyone's workday had moved onto Zoom. A short demo of a live video call surviving a failover to 4G on Dell EMC SD-WAN, recorded at WAN Dynamics.
WAN Dynamics demo video. Published 11 June 2020.
Three months into the pandemic, video calls had become the thing that could not drop. Every branch, clinic and home office was running its day on Zoom, and the question we heard from customers changed from "does SD-WAN save money" to "will my call survive when the circuit goes down."
So I recorded the answer. In this demo I run a live Zoom call through a Dell EMC SD-WAN edge, which was Dell's packaging of the VeloCloud platform we deployed at WAN Dynamics, and fail the primary circuit over to 4G mid-call. The call keeps going. It is the same idea as the 2017 failover demonstration with a hosted phone call, updated for the application everyone actually cared about in 2020.
What makes it work is that the overlay measures every path continuously and steers real-time traffic by application, so the call is moved before the loss becomes something a person notices.
