# Bridging Silos with AI and Telemetry

The question on the table was whether networks need more telemetry. The easy answer is yes. The honest answer is yes, but selectively, and anyone who has ever deployed an intrusion detection system on everything knows why: you either drown in alerts or get annoyed enough to block them all.

Asked what one thing a networking team should look at to improve the quality of the data they get, I reframed it. Look at the system holistically. Network engineers are the jack-of-all-trades in most IT shops, and we have to understand application behaviour, because that is what is actually driving network performance. If there were no users the network would be fine. Application performance, security and network telemetry have been treated as separate domains for a long time, and the interesting thing AI brings is a set of tools that can finally bridge those silos and read them together.

Another delegate added the organisational half: IT is stovepiped around specialisations, so make contacts outside the networking group and learn enough of their vocabulary to cross the boundary.

My second piece of advice was more mundane and, in my experience, more often the actual problem. Make sure the telemetry is clean. I have been in environments where flows were being double-counted and every number was off, and nobody could work out why the graphs did not match what the interfaces were showing. Trust the data, but verify that it is what you think it is before you build anything on top of it.
